After all, we’re constantly bombarded with messages reminding us that fertility declines with age, with fewer viable eggs and lower chances of conception. It’s no wonder this can leave you feeling deflated, right?


But here’s the truth: while these messages have some reality, they don’t tell the whole story. There’s so much you can do to support your fertility, starting with understanding your body’s natural rhythms and the importance of timing.


You can gain insight into fertilisation and implantation by understanding how your cycle works and learning to track ovulation. These tools let you address the factors that influence your fertility with confidence.

Understanding fertility is one of the most empowering steps in your natural conception journey. It starts with recognising your body’s natural rhythms and identifying your fertile window, which are the days when you have a higher chance of conceiving. To help you understand better, I’ve broken the conception steps into three distinct steps. 


Step 1: Recognising Your Fertile Window

The first step to boosting fertility is recognising your fertile window. What does this mean? Your fertile window refers to the days during the first part of your cycle when you are most likely to conceive.


First, you have a period. Day 1 of your period is day 1 of your cycle. Your exact fertile days depend on the length of your cycle, but typically, it is the five to six days leading up to ovulation


This is when your body creates the ideal conditions for conception:


  • Sperm survival: Fertile cervical mucus helps sperm survive for up to six days, providing a nurturing environment and guiding them toward the egg.

  • Egg viability: Once released, the egg is viable for just 12–24 hours, so timing intercourse during this window ensures sperm is already in place, ready to meet the egg.


Understanding the bigger picture of your menstrual cycle is key to identifying your fertile window. Each phase in the cycle prepares your body for conception, offering important clues about when you’re most fertile. However, you don’t have to choose just one perspective! Below is a breakdown of the menstrual cycle phases through the lens of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This holistic approach complements the Western view and offers valuable insights into how Yin and Yang's energies mirror the hormonal shifts in your body. With both perspectives, you’ll better understand your cycle and feel empowered to track your fertility naturally.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) offers a simple yet insightful way to view the menstrual cycle as five distinct phases:


  1. Menstrual phase (5 days approx.): This is the time of your period. During this period, the body is shedding the uterine lining that wasn’t needed for pregnancy, marking the beginning of a new cycle.

  2. Post-menstrual/pre-ovulation phase (8 days approx.): Your body replenishes after menstruation. This phase is about nourishing the Yin energy, building the uterine lining, and preparing an egg for release.

  3. Ovulation (1 day approx.): The star of your cycle! During ovulation, the mature egg is released, and this is the key day in your fertile window when conception is most likely to happen.

  4. Post-ovulation phase (7 days approx.): Once ovulation occurs, Yang energy takes over to support the fertilised egg (if conception happens). Hormones like progesterone dominate, preparing the uterus for potential implantation.

  5. Premenstrual phase (7 days approx.): If the egg isn’t fertilised, your body prepares for the next cycle. This is a time for reflection and balance as your body transitions back to the menstrual phase.

For example, your fertile window spans the late post-menstrual phase through ovulation, when cervical mucus becomes more abundant and sperm-friendly. Tracking changes in your body, like cervical mucus consistency or basal body temperature (BBT), can give you further clues to pinpoint this window. Hormones like oestrogen and progesterone must work together seamlessly to keep everything on track. When they’re in sync, your body functions like clockwork, increasing your chances of conceiving naturally.

  2. Cervical mucus quality: Cervical mucus is one of nature’s best-kept fertility secrets. It becomes stretchy and clear during your fertile window, perfect for nourishing and protecting sperm on their journey to meet the egg. Supporting your body’s production of fertile mucus through hydration and good nutrition can make a world of difference.

  3. Stress management: Stress doesn’t just weigh on your mind; it can also affect ovulation and disrupt hormonal balance. Finding ways to relax, prioritise self-care, or simply carve out moments of calm in your day isn’t just good for your emotional health—it’s essential for your fertility, too.

Step 2: Timing Conception


Recognising your fertile window is an empowering first step, but now comes the part that brings everything together: timing conception. This is where you align your body’s natural processes with the right timing to give sperm and egg the best chance to meet.


Your body does incredible things in this process, creating the ideal conditions to support conception. From the role of cervical mucus to the fascinating journey sperm makes to meet the egg, understanding these details can help you feel more connected to what’s happening inside. 


Let’s take a closer look at how your body works to make conception possible:


Cervical Mucus


During your fertile window, your body has a built-in conception-support system, the cervical mucus. This incredible fluid doesn’t just appear by chance; it plays a vital role in helping sperm survive and find their way to the egg by creating the perfect environment for conception:


  • Open cervical canal: During your fertile window, your cervix softens and opens slightly, allowing sperm to swim more efficiently toward the fallopian tubes.

  • Supportive cervical mucus: Fertile cervical mucus is stretchy and clear, almost like raw egg whites. It keeps sperm alive for five to six days, nourishing and guiding them to meet the egg.


Hormones are also working in your favour during this time. Many women notice a natural boost in libido, helping to strengthen intimacy with their partner. It’s amazing to think that your body has its own way of encouraging conception!


The Sperm’s Journey to the Egg


After ejaculation, sperm travels through the cervical canal and into the fallopian tubes, where they wait for ovulation. The force of ejaculation is crucial, especially because the sperm has a long journey to go!


If ovulation occurs while sperm is present, the egg and sperm can meet, leading to fertilisation. This union forms a zygote, the first cell of a new life. While it may sound complex, this is what your body is beautifully designed to do.

If you’re trying to conceive, the key is to have sex before ovulation so the sperm is already in place, ready and waiting to meet the egg.

A Deep Dive into Fertilisation vs. Implantation


When you’re on a natural fertility journey, it’s easy to mix up the roles of fertilisation and implantation, as both are crucial steps. Still, they happen at different stages of conception. Let’s break it down so you can understand these two amazing processes your body is designed to support.


What is Fertilisation?


Fertilisation is the magical moment when sperm meets an egg in the fallopian tube and forms a zygote, the first cell of a new life. For this to happen, timing is everything. Sperm needs to be in place and ready to meet the egg, so identifying your fertile window is important.


Once fertilisation occurs, the zygote divides into multiple cells and goes down the fallopian tube toward the uterus. This dynamic stage marks the start of your baby’s development.


What is Implantation?


Implantation happens several days later, typically 6–10 days after fertilisation. By this time, the zygote has transformed into a blastocyst, a tiny cluster of cells with a critical mission: to attach itself to the uterine lining.


When the blastocyst successfully implants, it marks the official start of pregnancy. The uterine lining plays a vital role here, as it must be thick and rich with nutrients to nourish the developing embryo.
